About this Character:
Batman is a comic book character created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Since his debut in Detective Comics issue 27 in May of 1939, Batman has become a superhero icon and the star of countless books, movies, comics and cartoons. When he is not busy fighting crime in Gotham City, Batman goes by the name Bruce Wayne. Other aliases include: “The Batman”, “The Dark Knight” and “The Caped Crusader”, just to name a few. IGN’s May 2011 Top 100 list of Comic Book Heroes and Empire Magazine’s 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters listed Batman second, after Superman. The recent series of Batman movies directed by Christopher Nolan started in 2005 with the film Batman Begins and ended in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises. These films have set records for highest opening weekend attendance and second highest domestic gross.
In everyday life, Bruce Wayne is an eccentric American billionaire whose foray into crime fighting was initiated after he witnessed his parents’ murder when he was a child. His secret lair, which is located underneath Wayne Manor, is appropriately named “The Bat Cave”. While he has no actual superpowers, Batman makes use of numerous gadgets, ingenuity and strength and occasional crime fighting partners, such as Robin or Cat Woman. Although he typically prefers to work alone, Batman occasionally teams up with the Justice League of America or the Outsiders. Additionally, his ever trustworthy butler Alfred is almost always available to help Batman with anything he needs. Batman faces many enemies in Gotham City—from the everyday criminal to super-villains like The Joker, Two-Face, The Riddler, Catwoman and Mr. Freeze.
Batman’s use of bat imagery is meant to intimidate criminals. The Bat-Signal is a bat-shaped signal that is used by Gotham law enforcement whenever they need to summon Batman. A searchlight with the bat emblem is shone into the night sky and is visible all over Gotham. In most comics and cartoons, Batman is shown wearing a gray and blue costume, but variations have been used over the years. Recent Batman movies like The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises show Batman wearing a black costume. Since Batman is a regular guy who possesses no superpowers, his collection of gadgets is impressive. Vehicles like the Batmobile, Batplane/Batwing, and Batboat have been implemented countless times in various forms. New gadgets are constantly being created for Batman, which are usually kept in his utility belt.
